Bunnings and Intellihub expand home electrification offer, making renewable energy accessible to more Australians

Solar and battery

Bunnings is expanding its home electrification offer, Zelora, bringing more affordable solar and battery options to households at a time when energy costs and grid transformation are reshaping how Australians power their homes.

Following a successful trial in Sydney and Newcastle last year, Zelora is now being rolled out across metropolitan Queensland, Victoria, and South Australia, significantly increasing access to the offer nationwide.

The expansion of Zelora is a response to the significant shifts occurring in Australia's economic and energy landscapes. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports rising living costs across all household types and Canstar’s Consumer Pulse data shows essential bills such as electricity among Australians’ key financial worries.

With upfront cost a major barrier for around half of Australians considering home electrification1, Zelora provides a subscription-based model that allows customers to pay monthly, with full ownership of the system at the end of the 10-year term. The Zelora offer is backed by Bunnings and delivered in partnership with Intellihub.

The subscription includes ongoing performance monitoring, fault resolution, smart energy optimisation and centralised customer support, which is managed via a mobile app. This helps households optimise and manage their energy use, maximise savings, and provide grid responsiveness.

As part of the expansion, Zelora is also broadening its battery range, including options from Sigenergy and Anker SOLIX, with additional products in development, to suit different household needs and budgets.

Early Zelora customers are already experiencing the benefits

Early customers are already seeing benefits. Analysis of a sample of NSW Zelora households found an average 25 per cent reduction in electricity usage charges over a three-month summer period with a mean battery size of 18kWh, including subscription costs. Excluding subscription costs, the estimated reduction averaged 88 per cent2.

Richard from Warrimoo, NSW, chose Zelora for its flexible subscription model and transparent quoting process.

"I had a horrendous electricity bill, we could get bills up to $700-800 per month which was crazy," Richard explains. "The decision to get solar was mainly to reduce the bills. It's good to use AC during the day without having to worry about the bill getting too expensive."

For Richard, having a battery was essential to capture the solar energy his system overproduces during the day and use it overnight. "I wouldn't have gone solar without a battery," he explains. "Being able to capture that energy to use overnight is important."

Rob from North Turramurra, NSW, was equally deliberate in his choice. "I'd seen reports on how many installers and solar retailers had closed up shop and left their customers in the lurch with warranty and after sales service," Rob says.

"I wanted to pick an outfit that cared about their reputation and would honour their commitments which I know Bunnings takes very seriously." For Rob, the quality of installation, responsive customer service and transparent pricing were decisive factors in choosing Zelora.

Energy costs remain a front-of-mind concern for Australian households, with government at state and federal levels supporting viable long-term solutions. Political consensus now recognises that consumers want electrified homes and are ready to act when given access and support.

Why Zelora is poised to be a gamechanger

  1. The composition of Australia’s grid is currently undergoing significant change. In Q4 2026, renewables supplied more than 50% of the NEM’s electricity, with this being fuelled heavily by solar and battery uptake and utilisation. There is strong consumer demand for electrification and the grid’s future will be increasingly shaped by the way households manage their electricity.
    ‍
  2. Household energy is becoming ‘smart’ – with optimised storage and consumption delivered through connected devices and infrastructure. Automated EV charging, heating and cooling integration, and managed smart devices (Consumer Energy Resources) are where the grid is heading.
    ‍
  3. Widespread uptake of solar and battery, as part of the broader shift to renewables, ultimate benefits all as it helps ease wholesale electricity prices and provides further supply stability amidst this period of transition.
    ‍
  4. What will truly scale household electrification is a combination of accessible pricing, trusted providers, smart technology and strong customer support – we aim to bring this together through Zelora's products and solutions, in line with our purpose to simplify and accelerate the energy transition.

Intellihub Group’s Chief Executive Officer, Wes Ballantine said: "The grid of the future will be powered by homes, not just utility-scale energy generators. Zelora represents the practical application of that vision, delivering smart, decentralised energy solutions that give Australian households control over their energy, and most importantly, unlocks meaningful savings on their energy bill. This partnership with Bunnings enables us to increase scale through a much-loved Australian brand at a critical inflection point for Australia's energy transition."

Bunnings Chief Operating Officer, Ryan Baker, said: “What we’ve seen through the trial in New South Wales is strong interest from Aussies for the Zelora offer, with plenty of customers wanting to go solar and add a battery to their homes, but upfront cost can be a barrier. Zelora removes that hurdle by giving customers a simple, supported way to pay monthly and electrify their homes.

“Home electrification can be complex, so Bunnings, in partnership with Intellihub, has focused on making Zelora as straightforward and cost effective as possible, helping customers with a solution that is easy to understand with full, ongoing customer support.”

Zelora is now available to metropolitan customers in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia. More information is available at www.zelora.com.au.

1. Source: Behavioural Economics Team of the Australian Government (BETA), “High-impact decisions that reduce household emissions”, August 2025. 2. Based on an analysis of early Zelora customers, being a sample of 23 NSW Zelora customers with battery sizes ranging from 7.8kWh to 39kWh (average 18kWh). Estimates are modelled by comparing customers’ electricity usage charges plus their actual monthly Zelora subscription costs (hardware and services components inclusive of GST and less their applicable government rebates) against what they would have paid on their existing electricity tariff if all electricity had been purchased from the grid. Fixed network charges are excluded. Data period: 1 January to 31 March 2026. Customers who already had solar installed, or who did not have a full three month data period, were excluded from the analysis. Actual savings will vary depending on usage, tariff, system configuration, location and season.
