- Partnership introduces Australia’s first major water utility smart “metering-as-a-service” model
- Designed for new multi-unit developments in the ACT
- Significant shift in water utility adoption of digital infrastructure
Sydney, Australia, 19 October 2026 – Intellihub has signed a partnership agreement with Icon Water to become the sole provider of smart water metering and data services for new Class A multi-unit developments across the ACT, marking an important milestone in the digital transformation of Australia’s water sector.
The partnership represents a significant shift in how water utilities adopt digital infrastructure, with Intellihub providing a fully managed solution that combines metering hardware, communications, and data services through a scalable as-a-service model. According to Intellihub’s Smart Water team, the Icon Water agreement is the first contract awarded by a major metropolitan Australian water utility under this model.
The deployment model leverages Intellihub’s experience in the multi-unit smart energy metering space, using technology to measure water usage at agreed regular intervals, and signal boosters to ensure the NBIoT network is available in building basements, carparks, and meter enclosures. This includes the use of ACMA-approved signal boosters that enhance coverage without interfering with the existing network.
Key Facts
- A new model for water utilities: The partnership introduces a managed smart water metering and data service, reducing the complexity of deploying and operating digital water infrastructure.
- Supporting ACT growth: Intellihub will deliver smart water metering and data services for eligible new Class A multi-unit developments.
- Building the foundation for a smarter water network: Use of ACMA-approved signal boosters can help enhance coverage and improve signal strength without interfering with the existing network and can support fairer billing, faster leak detection, and water conservation outcomes.
“The water industry is reaching an important inflection point. Utilities are increasingly looking for proven, scalable ways to modernise their networks and deliver better outcomes for customers. This partnership with Icon Water demonstrates how a carefully tailored, end-to-end digital approach can enable the safe and successful rollout of smart water metering, reducing implementation risk while unlocking the data and insights needed to improve efficiency, support conservation, and deliver better outcomes for customers,”
